Our story
More than survivors. We're proof.
We entered the foster care system the same way, but our journeys through it were completely different. Between the three of us sisters, we lived through child abuse, neglect, the loss of our biological mom, instability, a failed adoption, and growing up separated from one another.
We also came from harmful generational cycles: drug addiction, single motherhood, poverty, incarceration, and lack of education. We had to go through those hardships to break the cycles. And we know many more youth are going through the same system, falling through the cracks instead of rising above their circumstances.
That's why we started Let's Talk Sister 2 Sister: to open safe and honest conversations about foster care, trauma, and overcoming adversity.
Meet Nikki
Healing today for a brighter tomorrow
Hello, I'm Nikki, your host and the youngest of three siblings.
My story began in foster care after being removed from my biological mother's care as an infant. I was eventually placed with my great-aunt, where I experienced mental, physical, and emotional abuse until her passing during my senior year of high school.
For much of my life, I carried the painful belief that I wasn't enough, that I wasn't worthy of love, that no one would want me, and that I would never become anything. Somewhere along the way, I decided what I had been through would not define me. It would motivate me.
I graduated high school, attended community college, became a mother to my daughters while earning my associate degree, and continued my education at the University of North Texas, earning my BSW in Social Work in 2015 while working full-time. After a few years away from school, I returned to earn my MSW in 2019, once again balancing full-time work and motherhood.
My journey has included foster care, childhood and relationship abuse, single motherhood, self-doubt, and moments when giving up would have been easy. But I kept going.
I believe it's not how you start; it's how you finish. And it's not where you come from; it's where you want to go.
That belief inspired my sister, Karlonda, and me to create this podcast, a safe space for the honest conversations we didn't always have growing up. We're here to discuss what's difficult, uncomfortable, and often left unspoken.
Meet Karlonda
From foster care to purpose
As a former foster youth who experienced every aspect of the foster care system, Karlonda uses her experiences to help youth who are in similar circumstances. After graduating from college with a bachelor's and a master's degree, she began this journey with a career in social work, transitioned into a career in education, and also serves as a mentor and board member for the nonprofit Unfaulted. In addition to her work as a school teacher, Karlonda continues to share her story of growing up in the foster care system through speaking engagements, podcasting, and writing. Karlonda is also a wife and mother, and her favorite hobbies are reading, writing, shopping, and gardening.
